Where are the Voices of Pain Patients?

The article Where are the Voices of Pain Patients? was posted February 1, 2016 and discusses the issues of opioid pain medications to people who desperately need them. I think we can all see that not all of us are the same and do not all fit into the "same box"! Not all opioid pain medication works the same for everyone and the CDC guidelines limiting the amounts that can be prescribed by our pain management doctors are really hurting and destroying chronic pain patients! Thank you Dr. Maureen Wilks for sharing your story. To read the full article and content, please continue reading from the link above from paindr.com.

Here are a few extracts from the article.

Where are the Voices of Pain Patients?

"It seems that every day there is another news item on either prescription drug overdose deaths or the rise in heroin overdose deaths.( 1-8)  These stories tug at our hearts, the heartbreak of the loss of a vibrant teenager or young adult to prescription drugs and/or heroin. But where are the stories of the pain patients? Where is the voice of my husband who lived stoically for over twenty years with chronic pain? He bravely kept moving forward always hoping for the pain to abate. He tried all the treatments, countless treatments over endless years. Multiple physical therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractic adjustments, massage, herbal remedies, herbal wraps, yoga, meditation or prayer but his pain persisted. He took all the non-narcotic medication prescribed. None helped with the pain but the side effects added insult to his pain; some made him feel like a zombie, not himself. Those I made him, stop. Some made him sick to his stomach, others he listed to the right, and a few made ringing noises in his ears and brain. One had him sweating so much that by morning his pillow was wet. Many of them left him feeling zoned out, listless and mentally uncomfortable, and all the while the pain continued, poorly managed, becoming its own disease. Finally a doctor listened to his life story and prescribed opioids, along with physical therapy. Over the following months his pain backed down, and his life was bearable, and he moved back into the world to participate with friends and family; to go for walks and camping trips that had become impossible to bear."

"And then we read of research, or lack thereof, concludes that opioids do not work on long term chronic pain. I think of my husband and all the patients I have met over the past ten years as an advocate for chronic pain patients in New Mexico and I want to scream “How can you make such broad sweeping statements? How can you ignore the voices of patients whose lives have been transformed by opioids and have lived with them for many years? How can you place all chronic pain patients into one simple neat little box, wrap it up and throw away the key for a chance of happiness for intractable chronic pain patients?”  Because this is exactly what the latest guidelines from the CDC will do."

Here is another good article from paindr.com Do Pain KILLERS KILL? It discusses both sides of the prescription opioid issues from chronic pain sufferers needing opioid pain medications for quality of life and the issues of people overdosing. To read the full article and content, please continue reading from the link above from paindr.com.

Why are our pain management doctor's and pharmacists being targeted by the government (CDC and DEA) causing them to deny proper care for their chronic pain patients? The CDC guidelines are NOT saving lives but are destroying any quality of life for chronic pain sufferers! Pain patients are dying because they cannot get t heir pain medications from their pain management doctor or when they do, they have a very hard time finding a pharmacy that will fill them! These are legitimate prescriptions that are being denied by pharmacists to be filled for the pain patient! Most chronic pain patients are already disabled but are required to go to their pain management doctor each month praying that they will get their pain medications and then have to go to multiple pharmacies to get them filled!  Our pain conditions are real! This is why many are having to turn to illicit drugs on the streets and are overdosing! Others are committing suicide because they can no longer stand the pain they are in! I have been contacted by several people through this website that are telling me that they are considering suicide! Please stand up for the chronic pain patients rights to get proper medical treatment and pain medication! Remember, this could happen to anyone! One day you are fine and the next day you are in horrible pain that can only be controlled by opioid pain medication! What happens if  you can't get the pain medication you need? Think about it!

Do PainKILLERS Kill?

There are potentially over 100 million people in this country with chronic pain. If there is one thing we might be able to agree on is that any discussion of a therapy that is good for everyone is too stupid to have. And so too is a discussion that any therapy is wrong for all of them. Even if benefits were once overstated and risks belittled, intellectual dishonesty pushing in one direction doesn’t justify it pushing back in the other. Not when patients are squeezed in the middle. So while I can sometimes be militant and perhaps even intransigent, please pardon my passion, and for the sake of people, who are suffering, let’s attempt to build a bridge. Personally, the entire issue has been quite daunting for me in my practice as well as trying to balance that while combating some otherwise respected adversaries and supporting other ethical and competent pain practitioners. Let’s stipulate that we agree that prescription opioids are a Godsend to some, they can be the end of the world for others.

Now imagine each day awakening next to your spouse, riddled with chronic pain unresponsive to any medication but opioids such as morphine or oxycodone.  Heart wrenching to the family?  Of course – it’s also a slow death that includes anxiety, depression, humiliation, panic, and devastation for the victim and the family.  The days, weeks, months, or years leading up to it will undoubtedly annihilate any family.  The victim of persistent unrelenting pain finds him or herself out of control, unable to function, and unable to work or lead any type of productive life.

There is a lot of good information from an on-line website http://paindr.com/. Dr. Jeffrey Fudin is an expert in pain management and is fighting for the rights of chronic pain sufferers to have appropriate medical treatment including opioid medication.

The article Opioids, Anarchy, Communism and Pain was posted April 29, 2016 discussed what kind of government and health care system we really have and the injustice that is being forced on chronic pain sufferers. To read the full article and content, please continue reading from the link above from paindr.com.

Opioids, Anarchy, Communism, and Pain

"But from where I sit, it is quite clear that legitimate patients and clinicians alike often feel as though they are treated as criminals living in a surreal Police State never before imagined. Every new anti-pain policy that comes down the pike begins with some double-speak about how it is not meant to impede legitimate access to pain medications for those who need them? Orwell would have been proud."

"Society as a whole is treating pain patients and their clinicians unfairly and unconstitutionally."

The article further discusses how chronic pain sufferers are being treated worse than animals and how our rights are being violated! Please join Dr. Jeffrey Fudin with our fight against the government and their treatment or non-treatment of chronic pain sufferers!
